Commuters demand security of main highways

Commuters demand security of main highways

Apr 19, 2015 - 15:24

QALAT (Pajhwok): Following a visible surge in militants’ attacks on passengers on main highways, commuters face great threat while travelling on highways specifically on Kabulinfo-icon-Kandahar road, residents in southern Zabul province said Sunday.

The residents demanded the government to establish more security check posts on the vital highway to protect lives of passengers.

Abdul Qayyum, a local resident, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Talibaninfo-icon increased their activities, with the start of spring season, such as planting roadside bombs and mines.

He demanded the government should provide security on roads and protect highways from pernicious activities of militants.

Sher Ahmed, another local resident, voiced same reservations by saying that insurgents wanted to control the main high ways.

It merits mention that 31 passengers were kidnapped in the province two months back who were still missing.

But security officials pledged they were capable to ensure security on main highways from insurgents.

Brig. Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Rogh Lewanai, Zabul police chief, acknowledged that militants had increased their activities recently but he said that commuters should travel without any sense of fear.
