President asked to remove election commissioners

President asked to remove election commissioners

Feb 04, 2016 - 18:00

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Participatory Democracy for Afghanistaninfo-icon (PDFA) on Thursday asked President Ashraf Ghani to remove commissioners on the two electoral bodies as soon as possible.

PDFA said reforms in laws and the electoral regime were a vital part of the national unity government agreement.

Asadullah Mohseni, head of PDFA, told a news conference in Kabul that the electoral system could not be reformed despite efforts of the Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) that had shared its two sets of suggestions about reforms with the Presidential Palace.

He said presidential decrees, which had been previously released for electoral reforms, were also inefficient.

Weak management and misuse of positions by senior members of the election bodies were the main causes that plunged the 2014 elections into crisis and damaged public and international community’s trust in the Afghan electoral process, he added.

The government leaders should put aside their differences and work for reforms in the election commissions, Mohseni continued.

He said problems created by the lack of legal cover for the selection committee, pertinacity of election commission members to their posts, announcement of the election schedule and differences between the unity government leaders had blocked the electoral reforms.

The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) had set an Oct 15 date for the long-delayed parliamentary and district council elections.

Mohseni hoped the unity government would pay serious attention to the issue of electoral reforms.

The PDFA also released a resolution letter that said the incumbent commissioners on the election commissions should not create problem for reforms in the electoral system and they should be removed.
