Afghans among 15 Gitmo detainees transferred to UAE

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Obama administration has announced the transfer of 15 detainees, including Afghan citizens, from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A prison task force had approved in 2009 the transfer of six of the detainees, the Pentagon said. Keeping the other nine was not necessary to counter a continuing significant threat, it added.

Including the citizens of Afghanistaninfo-icon, Yemen and the UAE, the inmates will be transferred to the UAE, a statement from the Department of Defense said.

As a result of largest single transfer under the presidencyof Barack Obama, the shifting of prisoners reduces the population at the notorious prison to 61. When Obama took office, 242 suspects were held at Guantanamo

The review boards consist of representatives from the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justiceand State; the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Obaidullah, an Afghan who was allegedly forced by the Talibaninfo-icon to learn about land mines, is among those who will be freed.Abdel Qadir al-Mudafari, who is said a former bodyguard for Osama bin Laden, is also on the list.
