US, UK, Pakistan condole Pir Gilani’s demise

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States, the UK and Pakistan on Sunday condoled the death of Afghanistaninfo-icon High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC) chairman Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani.

Pakistaninfo-icon’s Foreign Office in a statement said: “We are deeply saddened to learn about the demise of Pir Syed Ahmed Gilani, Chairman of the HPC of Afghanistan.”

It said Pir Saheb was an influential religious leader who was widely respected in Afghanistan and throughout the region for his contributions towards Islam and the Afghan nation.

He would always be remembered for his tremendous efforts to bring peace to Afghanistan and promote reconciliation, the statement said.

The government and people of Pakistan express their heartfelt condolences to the family and the people and government of Afghanistan, the FO said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also expressed his deep grief over the sad demise of Pir Syed Ahmed Gailani. He also expressed condolences on behalf of the people and the Government of Pakistan, according to a press release of the PM Office media wing.

The PM said the services of Pir Saheb and his tremendous efforts to bring peace in Afghanistan and promote reconciliation would always be remembered.

The US and the United Kingdom (UK) embassies in Kabulinfo-icon also issued statatments and condoled the demise of Gilani

In a tweet, the US Embassy said they were saddened by the news of HPC chairman death and offered condolences to his family.

Also the UK diplomatic mission said: “Desperately sad to hear this news. A great Afghan leader – I have been privileged to know for 20 years. May he rest in peace.”

Pir Gilani died in a hospital in Kabul on Saturday evening after a prolong illness and was laid to rest at an ancestral graveyard in Surkhrod district near Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday.
