Misuse of right to protest won’t be allowed: Ghani

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Peaceful protests are a democratic right of the people, but no one would be allowed to misuse such demonstrations, President Ashraf Ghani’s office said on Friday.

In a statement, the Presidential Palace asserted the government’s realization of people’s pain. “A few days back, this capital city witnessed a deadly incident.”

An atmosphere of peace was needed to mourn the dead, the statement said, adding the enemy was out to harm the innocent people.

At least seven people were killed and 10 others wounded on Friday when a massive protest erupted at the site of a devastating suicide bombing in Kabul earlier in the week.

Ghani said security forces were duty-bound to deal patiently and professionally with demonstrators. “But protest organisors should not allow the misuse of this democratic right of the people…”

However, the government promised it would not let anyone incite violence, disturb the public order or whip up public sentiments in their petty personal interest.
