Ahmadzai terms his removal as unconstitutional

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The ousted head of the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) has accused President Ashraf Ghani of violating the Constitution and termed his removal as illegal and based on wrong suggestions.

Addressing a press conference here, the former IEC chairman, Najibullah Ahmadzai, said his removal by the president was based on wrong suggestion from other commissioners of the IEC, a move he called as against the Constitution and the election law.

“I don’t consider myself ousted, yes, it is a conspiracy hitched by some circles at the Presidential Palace who don’t want the conduct of elections,” he alleged.

Ahmadzai, who had been the IEC chief for one year, said during his tenure he resisted pressures from specific circles at the Presidential Palace as they wanted the IEC to work according to their wishes.

“If I had accepted their demands, my removal would not have happened and the suggestion by some commissioners about my removal came under pressure from the same circles,” said Ahmadzai.

He went on to accuse some commissioners of ethnic and political favoritism and said the people of Afghanistaninfo-icon should never expect transparent elections under their supervision.

Recalling his activities, Ahmadzai said, in the past one year he reactivated the commission and acquired the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARCinfo-icon) membership for the commission.

On Wednesday, President Ghani removed Najibullah Ahmadzai as head of the IEC through a decree.

According to the presidential order, a copy of which is obtained by Pajhwok Afghan News, the IEC head was removed from his post in line with the decision of the election commission and the presidential order.

The members of the election commission had elected Ahmadzai as head of the IEC almost a year back.
