AIBAK (Pajhwok): Work on consolidating five canals has been completed at a cost of 28.5 million afghanis by the World Bank in northern Samangan province.
Homayoon Habib, head of agriculture, irrigation and livestock, told Pajhwok Afghan News the canals were embanked in Hazrat Sulatan, Dawlatabad districts and Aibak city.
He said hundreds of water gates were installed on the canals for irrigating farmland in the areas.
Khanshiren, a farmer in Hazrat Sultan district, said previously silt accumulated in the canal bed and water leaked through its banks.
He expressed happiness and said the completion of the canal embankment project resolved problems they previous faced in irrigating their fields.
According to the Agriculture Department, work on other canals in Qishlaq, Hussaikhel, Loragai villages has been underway at a cost of 23 million afghanis funded by the World Bank.
